InformAfrica ? IBM, a top IT Company seen in almost every industry and EarthSearch Communications, a?technology company boasting the world?s first wireless communications between GPS and RFID, are two technology companies expanding their solutions to Africa?s emerging markets.
Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Angola, and Ethiopia are some of the emerging markets in Africa that is very ripe for investment and rapid development.
The African continent accounts for 14 percent of the world?s population and is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. With a growth rate expected to average 7 percent annually over the next 20 years, Africa is poised to become a leading source of innovation in a variety of industries.
To enhance the scientific and technology base on the African continent, IBM announced recently that it will be opening a new research lab in Nairobi, Kenya, an emerging market in IT, software development and skilled ICT manpower development.
?IBM continues to expand its operations in key growth markets and we plan to lead the way by bringing Africa into our global network of IBM Research laboratories.? -Dr. John E. Kelly III, IBM senior vice president and director of IBM Research
IBM is not the only technology company that is expanding operations in key growth markets, EarthSearch Communications, a technology company delivering cutting edge application of GPS/RFID and sensor technology,?also recognizes the potentials in Kenya?s technology sector; especially in the areas of Oil & Gas, logistics and service, military supply chain, security, health,?and every other industry where RFID and GPS technology is of the essence ? including education.
Just few months ago, March to be exact, EarthSearch Communications successfully executed a Master Distribution of its proprietary solutions with Asonics Live Interlink, a Kenyan technological company in the areas of asset tracking with growing operations in more than 8 countries and over 12,000 personnel on the ground.?Asonicslive Interlink is now the exclusive master distributor of EarthSearch integrated RFID/GPS products and services across the east African region.
?There is a significant need for EarthSearch technology and the solutions it provides in our country as well as in other markets in the region, the movement of cargo between countries in east Africa is now more vital than ever before. The recent launching of the Lamu port by Kenyan government which will link it with Ethiopia and Sudan in the effort to harness trade among African countries is a testament to the need for this solution,? said Mr Thaddeus Mailumunguti, CEO Asonics Live Interlink, during a press statement.
EarthSearch technology provides complex logistics solution through its LogiBoxx device, the GATIS platform for monitoring fixed assets and cargo in transit. Solutions provided by EarthSearch includes Oil Tanker monitoring, Workforce management, Tool tracking, Electronic locks for cargo, Warehouse management and access control solutions using EarthSearch proprietary wireless communication between GPS and RFID.
?EarthSearch have been working to establish strong presence in the East African region for some time now. It is a vibrant and fast growing market with significant need for cargo and asset security using advanced logistics application. I am looking forward to working with Thaddeus, Joyce and Jeff and all the other executives at Asonics,? said Kayode Aladesuyi, CEO of ECDC
Meanwhile, Africa will be IBM?s 12th global laboratory and the first science and technology research lab on the continent conducting both applied and far-reaching exploratory research. According to recent information gathered from?IBM Research,?IBM?s presence in Kenya will encourage and strengthen an innovative culture, and engage local entrepreneurs and innovators to develop solutions to the challenges faced by the people of Kenya, the surrounding region and other fast-growing markets around the world.
Unlike Nigeria or Egypt, with growing rates of conflicts and/or political instability; Kenya is a more stable country suitable for investment and economic development.
While EarthSearch?s solutions and technologies are touching lives by changing the way businesses and governments operate and manage assets and security in Africa;?IBM?s new Kenya laboratory will seek to develop technology-assisted solutions to the problems of Africa?s fast-growing cities (Africa has 52 cities of more than a million people ? more than are in Europe).
