When you buy a new place, and need to replace some appliances or better yet, you are starting from scratch it?s very overwhelming. Where do you start? What items are okay to buy used, and what items are worth the extra money to invest in a brand new one? Be sure to check out this list of our guidelines of tips and tricks when it comes to buying appliances.
- Make a List- Make a list of features and priorities you want to see in all of your appliances, and stick to it. ?Lifetime warranty?, ?Eco-friendly? , ?Energy Efficient? and so forth.
- Avoid Impulse Buys- The sales floor is really very similar to a car dealer?s lot. The employees are often paid on commission and try to steer you toward the most expensive item, or specific items their managers instructed them to try to sell. Feel free to ask a sales associate for help, but make it clear of what you want,(see aforementioned tip, ?Make a List? what you do not want, your price range, etc. right off the bat to avoid falling for any impulse purchases.
- Should you buy it used?- If your trying to save money, and buying appliances used, shop with caution. Talk to the seller about why they are wanting to sell the appliance, if there are any current problems, if repairs have been made in the past, etc. Ask the seller for a window of time where you can return the appliance should it not work as you were told. If he/she says no, or seems reluctant or the item is priced ridiculously low, skip it. Most likley, there is a major flaw in the appliance.
- Keep the space you have in mind- Buy appliances that will fit comfortably into your home. For example ,someone living in a tiny studio apartment or loft may want to opt for the stack able washer and dryer that can be installed a closet rather than an traditional set.
- Shop for your needs- If your regular dinner plans involve restaurants or take out and you consider making a box of Hamburger Helper cooking, you don?t need a dual stove with attachable indoor grill. If you live alone or with only one other person, you probably don?t need a large upright freezer or XL heavy duty washer and dryer set just because it was on sale.
